Weekly Tangent – Mother’s Day Contest! – 4/29/13 [CLOSED]

weeklytangent_587x239

Hello Tangenters!

Now, I suspect that most of us know someone who is a mom (or is like a mom).  And it’s almost Mother’s Day!  May 12th is the day to appreciate those wonderful women in our lives.  Often, we do that with presents of some kind.

I’ve given various gifts to varying degrees of success over the years.  To be fair, there are far fewer half-dead plants in disposable nursery pots nowadays…  The thing is, I haven’t figured out what I’m getting my Mom this year… or what I should avoid.  And I need your help.

What I want to know (from those of you who are over 13) is this:  What is the best Mother’s Day you’ve ever witnessed?  And, more importantly, which one was the worst (in a hilariously disaster-ful kind of way)?

I want to hear about the giant bird that pooped on your grandmother’s shoulder during Mother’s Day brunch or the shaving kit you were sure your wife would love as much as you did…

What is the reward for sharing this triumph and/or crippling embarrassment publicly on the internet, you ask?  How about 25 WildCoins?!  Tell us your story in the comments below (by Noon (12:00 PM PDT) Monday, May 6th) and you’ll be entered into a raffle to win 25 WildCoins!

You could buy the mother in your life an Android game with that!  Or, you could keep it for yourself.  I won’t tell… or judge.

I will announce the raffle winner on Friday, May 10th in the new Android games post.

Why didn’t I ever think about crowdsourcing Mother’s Day gift ideas before…?!

All right, there’s just one last piece of business.  Thanks to all who participated in last week’s haiku contest!  All of the poems were great and the competition was stiff, but the winning haiku of last week’s Polar Bowler: 1st Frame contest is:

White and fluffy bear
Soaring down the alley lane
I need better aim

Congratulations, Amber Rose Timmons!  Your smart and funny haiku just won you 25 WildCoins!

We’ll be contacting you through email.

Tangentially,

Mari

Mother’s Day Contest Rules:  You can submit twice – one happy ending and one hilarious tragedy.  Give us two stories and you’ll double your chances in the 25 WildCoins raffle!  You must be over 13.  Your comment must be submitted before Noon (12:00 PM PDT) Monday, May 6th to be included in the raffle.  Good luck!

P.S.  There may be a delay in comments appearing.  We review all of them before they go live.  Don’t worry if your comment doesn’t show up right away – we will get to it!

As a mother, my greatest Mother’s Day was my first. My daughter, who was due in June, decided to come in April. She had to spend a few weeks in the hospital because she was so early. But I was able to bring her home in time to celebrate my first Mother’s Day as a mom with my baby in my arms.
As a daughter, I am blessed to still have my mom and enjoy seeing her at least once a week for lunch and every Sunday for a visit with the grandchildren. We never know how much time on Earth we have with our loved ones, so never take them for granted. Spend time with them now before you lose the chance.

One day my mother was wearing a wig, ’cause of the ‘burnt my hair by a straightener accident’.

We went to church that day, my mother was paranoid of things that can blow her wig off like strong breezes, people accidentally knocking her or even herself trying to adjust it!
When a stranger approached her to sit down she’ll be whimpering!

After the long hours past (well it felt like it!) we got out as fast as we could, well, mother got out as fast as she could.
When she went in the car, the edge of the car roof knocked off her wig! But, she didn’t notice! All the people who attended church were staring at the golden orange piece of fluff on the ground.

She drove me home with some very visible burnt streaks of hair and a bald patch.
“That turned out to be okay!” mother cheered as they arrived home.
I replied, “Um, mom, there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you…”

On my first Mother’s day of 2000 my family made me a card with a picture of my daughter holding a card that said “Happy Mother’s Day” but when they printed the picture it was backwards. To me it didn’t matter because I knew it was made with their love. That was the best Mother’s day! :-)

This Mother’s Day will mark 14 years without having my wonderful mom. Even though I lost her in April 1999 I gain a very special nephew many years & 12 hours after my mom passed. It’s a very bittersweet time for me. All I ask is for any child is to cherish their time with their mom because you never know when you’ll lose her.

As a daughter growing up in a family of only women, I wanted to show my appreciation towards my grandma and mom. I thought a trip to a restaurant (one I won’t name) would be sure to start the best Mother’s day ever! However, after eating there (about 5 hours later), we all got sick – and while we were shopping too! So needless to say, we spent some bonding time at home while sharing a bathroom. :D

    (These will be short.)

    1. When I got some Finesses and and Ferb underwear when I was little, when I put on the all-Perry one for the first time, mom said “WHICH HAS PERRY ALL OVER HIS BUTT!” The rest of laughs but me. I was mad!

    2. My family (but mom) decided that we would mom 3 pancakes for breakfast. That is all? NO! The pancakes would spell “MOM” all together. WHen we finished and mom came, she was surprised!

Does #2 sound tasty? Well I AGREE!!

I’ve started out getting my mom gift baskets of bath gels, with not realy much thought. Usually it was somrthing that was left on the shelf, on a Mother’s Day afternoon. Out of three years, she never compained about the gifts, But the next year she asked for a sundress, and i informed her that i had already gotten her something. EMBARRASISNGLY, FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS, I HAVEN’T GOTTON MY MOTHER ANYTHING. I know that she feels unappreciated and disrespected, but I will
try not to make an more excuses and do the right thing.I do have a great mom, i just got caught up in self and want to turn things around. I think her best Mother’s Day was when i made arts and crafts for her in school, and gave her a card.(8 years ago)

I clearly remember one Mother’s day when a bouquet of roses, a box of Belgian chocolates, and a Mother’s day card arrived at our doorstep. My mom was so happy. After all, it was the first time it happened. We all thought it was from our dad who was at work at that time. We have already eaten the chocolate when we heard a knock on the door. It was our next-door neighbor and she asked us if we received anything by mistake. My mom and I looked at each other. We immediately called Dad and asked him if he had sent a package for mom that day but he said no. That’s when we realized our mistake. We knew way before that we share the same last name with our neighbor but what we didn’t know is that our neighbor’s and mom’s first names are also the same. We’re so used to calling each other by our nicknames so we ignored this bit of info before. Her sender also made a mistake in the house number which added to the confusion. What a mess! Good thing, our neighbor was so understanding. She just ask us for the roses and the card upon learning what happened to the chocolate. =)

I love my grandmother so much that I treat her like she’s my very own mother, too. She’s the one who took care of us when our mom was working abroad. As a child, I saw how hardworking she was and how she would always wake up early in the morning to prepare our breakfast. She’s also very patient and would always help us in our school projects. To show our appreciation for her kindness, I and my sister decided to give her a made-to-order dress. When Mother’s day came, we gave it to her. She was so surprised. We told her we’ve been saving our allowance so we can buy it for her. I told her not to cry in jest and that’s when the tears came falling. I found myself in tears too. I was 9 years old at that time.
