WildTangent Studios Wednesday – 4 Funny Washington Place Names

Hello ‘Tangenter,

Washington can be a quirky place (maybe not as quirky as Portland, but is anywhere?).

Here are some fun places with funny names to visit in the state that WildTangent headquarters and WildTangent Studios call home.

Deception Pass

This beautiful place kept the name George Vancouver gave it in the late 1700s. He thought the island was a peninsula and named this place for his error.

The famous (and terrifying) Deception Pass Bridge. It’s really high up, you guys.

Yes, in Washington, we have a city called George. And, yes, it was named after the first president.

Whiskey Dick Mountain

I couldn’t find any references for who named this mountain (and great hiking destination) or why they named it what they did, but I couldn’t leave it off the list. Does anyone know?

Cape Disappointment

An English explorer, who was clearly underwhelmed, named this piece of land. In actuality, it’s anything but disappointing to see.

What’s your favorite funny place-name?

Thanks to WildTangent Studios, who sponsored this short tour of Washington.

Wow! I’d love to know the origins of a lot of the town names on that list. To quote, well, you. “Fascinating!”
